The Marion Patriots set their expectations for the 2025 season immediately following the end of their 2024 campaign.

Most of the goals were the same: qualify for the state tournament and win the 5A East for the fourth time in five years.

But Marion believed it could play for a state championship this season, and after three days playing in front of massive crowds inside Fidelity Bank Arena, host of this year's Class 5A state tournament, the Patriots made the goal a reality on Wednesday afternoon.

The Patriots (27-2 overall) laid waste to their competition earlier this week, topping Sylvan Hills on Monday in straight sets (25-12, 25-7, 25-6). Marion was sharp again in the quarterfinals, eliminating Siloam Springs in three sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-21).

Marion will play 5A West champion Farmington at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, at Bank OZK Arena in Hot Springs.

MHS may have saved its best for Wednesday's semifinal when the Patriots avenged their 2024 playoff loss to Van Buren, pounding the Pointers in three sets (25-10, 25-16, 25-13).

"I'm so proud of every girl on our team because we have had the most competitive, toughest, all-out practices the last few weeks," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "Everyone has and keeps making an impact on our team leading up to this tournament. It's an unselfish group. It's such a fun group. It's a hard-working group. I'm just so lucky I've been able to have a front-row seat all year. I'm really proud of our girls.”

Marion advances to the state championship game for the eighth time in school history (all since 2000). The Patriots claimed Class 6A state championships in 2010, 2011, and 2015. This will be Marion's first finals foray since 2016.

The teams split the first 16 points when Marion ripped off the first run of the afternoon, starting when Jaida Sturdivant tallied a block point, followed by a kill to give the Patriots a 10-8 lead, and when Kennedy Bullins came up with a kill for a 12-8 Marion lead, Sylvan Hills called for time.

Marion's Reese Goodwin served a pair of aces following the timeout and came up with a kill to extend the Patriot advantage, and when Kendall Brown slammed a kill, the Pats had fashioned their first double-digit lead (22-12) of the afternoon, and Marion closed out when Brown served an ace and Kaitlyn Austin registered a kill of her own.

The teams again split the first 8 points of the second set, and Marion took the lead for good on a Brown kill, a Bullins ace, and back-to-back block points from Sturdivant, the latter giving her team a 10-4 bulge.

But Siloam Springs worked within 2 points at 12-10 following an Ellis kill, and the Panthers completed the comeback at 15 apiece following an Isabel Suarez block point.

Consecutive kills from Brown and Sturdivant gave Marion a 17-15 advantage, and the Patriots got 3 points from Bullins late in the set to close out the Panthers by 4 points.
